A great discovery for Sierra Leone: A diamond of 706 carats
Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries of the world. Indeed, about 52,9 % of the population lives under the poverty line.
Since its independence in 1961, the Sierra Leone is characterized by a major political instability. It’s only in 2002, when the country found a certain stability after a civil war of eleven years that the Sierra Leone tried to reconstruct in the aim to assure a better future for his inhabitants.

The exploitation of mines helps the country and increases its GDP (GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT). Despite its poverty, Sierra Leone would be rich diamond. These precious stones served to finance the civil war that Sierra Leone in sudden during more than eleven years.
We say the diamonds of the Sierra Leone that it’s a good qualitie, good color and rather pure.
The biggest rough diamond discovered in Sierra Leone was in 1972. The diamond weighed 970 carats and it was called the “Star of Sierra Leone”. It was the last big diamond found in Sierra Leone until … March 2017!
Indeed, a few months ago, a 706-carat diamond was discovered in Sierra Leone by an orthodox preach.
The preach, Emmanuel Momoh, discovered the diamond by making searches (excavations) in the village of Yakadu, well known for its diamond mines.
The stone was presented to Ernest Bai Koroma, the president of the country who thanks then all the workers implied (involved) in this magnificent find and insisted on the fact that the latter had to benefit to all the country
The value of the stone was not determined yet but the stone is kept (guarded) under cover in the Bank of Sierra Leone.
The BBC said that the find of this minister has been one of the 20 bigger diamonds in the world never discovered.
The only thing we are waiting for now, is to discover the value of the magnificent rough diamond.
